I have been apart of Beautycounter for almost 5 years now, and you’ve probably heard me say it once, but I’ll say it again… I love being a consultant. It has been one of the biggest blessings in my business and I can’t believe it has taken this long for me to write this post.
I get a lot of questions about it, and I want to answer them in one spot… this blogpost!
Let’s start here: my business has been changed forever because of Beautycounter. That sounds like a big statement, but it is true. And it has changed our life too!
There is also one more thing I wanted to say, my business wasn’t built overnight. It took years, and that’s ok. Because nothing that is worth building happens overnight. It takes time, but you can build up an amazing business and income from building a better beauty business.

What kind of business is a Beautycounter Business?
Is Beautycounter an MLM, Pyramid Scheme, or a Direct Sales company? First off, Pyramid Schemes are illegal and Beautycounter is not one. It tends to be brought up a lot, but no, those can’t happen. You do make money on your team, but nobody is at the top making all of the money. Anyone can make a big paycheck regardless of your team or when you started. Also, if you think about the structure of the corporate world, you will see that the boss makes more than the employees and the CEO makes the most. This structure is common in any industry and accepted based on how we do business.
Beautycounter is a Direct Sales company, and technically an MLM. But it’s bigger than that and differs from the vast majority of MLM’s. We are actually a Direct Retail brand. You can purchase through a consultant (like me), but also purchase from Beautycounter HQ or one of our retail stores. People have options, and it is one thing that I love most about this company. Nobody is locked into purchasing from a set consultant. But we also know that our Beautycounter story is best told person to person. Beautycounter is much more than a beauty company, we are a mission to tell people about clean beauty.
Now, most of our sales are done through a consultant. And that makes sense because people want to buy person to person if they can. They want personalized recommendations, they want to come to you for questions and if they need to return a product. Or, when the amazing holiday line comes out (because it is like Christmas for us consultants) you can explain the products and share about each new product and set.
What are the details of becoming a consultant?
The biggest thing to start this point is to say that starting a Beautycounter business is low overhead. I am a chiropractor, and although I never opened my own brick and mortar store I know that it is expensive (think $100k+).
It is only $50 to sign up as a consultant. It is a digital kit and gets you set up to sell. It’s incredibly affordable and not a big risk (just being honest). You also can purchase a starter set (I’ll talk about it later) but the cost is still low. What other company can you start with such low overhead?
Starter Sets
You can also purchase a starter set at the time you sign up. You can choose between 3 starter sets. I’m not linking to them becuase they change as our products change. But they tend to be around the $250, $500, $750 price points. You can also purchase makeup sets, but they aren’t as popular and versatile as the skincare sets. Unless you are a makeup artist or plan on doing a lot of makeovers in person, skincare is the way to go.
I always recommend a skincare set if you can swing it. This way you can try the products and give personal thoughts and recommendations on the products. It really jumpstarts your business. I love being able to try all of our products, even the ones I don’t use in my personal skincare routine. Message me for the starter kit details, they switch so I didn’t link them here.
Are there any requirements to hit to stay a consultant?
There are no monthly minimums, but you do have to maintain $750 in orders every 6 months, which is quite easy to achieve. Plus, your personal purchases qualify towards this too. It isn’t that big of a minimum to maintain, about $200 a month in sales or personal orders (but it doesn’t have to be done at a certain time or an amount per month). You also don’t have to purchase a certain amount per month to stay active or get paid.
How much do you make as a consultant? How much can you make?
This is a hard one to answer because it is so different for each person. But, let’s talk about the basics of the comp plan. As a consultant, you make 25-35% of your personal sales (it goes up the more you sell). This adds up because most orders are over $100.
You can look at the compensation plan graphic at the end of this article. You can also read the Income Disclosure Statement here.
If you are a blogger or business owner or work online, Beautycounter is an amazing affiliate program. It’s so much more than that (and can build to be one of the largest sources of income in your business). But where else can you sign up for an affiliate program where you make 25% on sales?
You can design this business and the hours you work your business. You are the boss, you obviously need to abide by Beautycounter’s policies and procedures, but, you can work the hours you want in a week, when in the week you work, that areas of our products and mission you focus on. You can do mostly in-person events and sales or go online (or both).
I do recommend spending your time on true income-producing activities (IPA’s). You need to be spending your time on the things that bring sales and connections with people. You can say you work 4 hours a week, but spend 3 hours scrolling social (we are all guilty of this at times). But, the real work done was only one hour. I have to prioritize where I spend my time ALL THE TIME!
How do you learn about all of the products? What if you don’t know much about skincare?
I can answer this question so confidently. Beautycounter equips you to learn the products, our mission, how to sell, and keeps you up to date on information and changes. I have said this before, but we don’t need to reinvent the wheel. We can put our spin and our own look to it (ABSOLUTELY), but we don’t need to create our own training material and build a business from scratch. You are given a lot of information to succeed.
I started this business knowing almost nothing about skincare. I barely washed my face. I wanted and loved the makeup first. And now I understand our product line and love sharing them with others and figuring out the best skincare routine for each of my clients. It takes a little while to get used to the products and product lines, but that’s where I can come in and help too!
If Beautycounter equips in the training material, then what do I do as your mentor?
I love bringing ladies onto my team and help them get started in their businesses. As much as HQ equips you, they don’t coach you or mentor you. This is where we get together as a team and grow and built together, or as much as you want to coach and be apart of team culture.
I help you set goals and coach you through the detials of your business. Sending samples, hosting pop-ups, recruiting, building your team. Really… whatever you want to learn and grow in this business, I’m here for you!
What does it take to build a business? Can I do that?
Here is what I know. The key to building a successful business is drive and consistency. You need to have the desire to build and grow your business. That doesn’t mean it needs to be built quickly. You just need to show up and want it to succeed. Beautycounter has amazing training. And between HQ and our team resources, we really set you up with great information on how to run your business. You don’t need to recreate the wheel. Yes, put your own spin on it (of course), but don’t try to do it all on your own.
When you keep building, you become a trusted resource for clean beauty to your friends and clients. You become their beauty person. They know they can ask you questions and come to you with skin concerns and recommendations.
Can I say something that may turn a few people away? But I feel I need to say this because it is important to running the business. If you want to grow a bigger business and grow a team, you need to get out of your comfort zone. I don’t love doing it myself, but I know I need to, and I do it every week in my business. It grows you personally and also your business.
