What am I? Wednesday
Ok everyone, let’s do another What Am I? Wednesday.
Can you guess what this ingredient label is?
What Am I?
I Am…
Cooking Spray!
First of all, it’s a Fat Free Cooking Spray, but it contails an oil, which is fat. Do you know how they are able to say Fat Free? It’s fat free because there is less than .5 grams of fat per serving. So in order to be fat free you have to decrease the serving size. What is a serving size of PAM cooking spray? 1/3 second spray. It says that 1 second spray covers a 10 inch skillet, and that is 3 serving sizes. Who sprays PAM for 1/3 of a second? It’s just a clever way they market the product.
Let’s break down these ingredients:
1. Canola Oil: I have mentioned many times before that Canola Oil is a PUFA. A polyunsaturated fatty acid. Very inflammatory, this canola is genetically modified and isn’t an oil that our body recognizes as healthy. There are better oils to use for cooking and baking!
2. Grain Alcohol from Corn and Lecithin from Soybeans: These are from GMO corn/ soybean products. So in addition to getting some other unhealthy ingredients, these are not of good quality.
3. Propellant: A propellant is something added because it’s a spray bottle. It is usually isobutane or propane. Butane, Isobutane, and Propane are colorless and odorless compressed gases that are derived from petroleum and natural gas.
What are some alternatives to this “All Natural” Cooking Spray?
Good, healthy Fats! And in high quantities. Good oils are amazing for your body and your cells. Your cell membrane is made up of fat, 2 layers of fat. And much of that fat is cholesterol. Yes, the fat that we are told not to eat by our medical world are actually the fat that heal our cells. If you heal your cells, you can heal your body. How awesome is that? I bet many of you are thinking, if I eat fat won’t I get fat? That’s another myth. Good fats don’t make you fat. They actually increase your ability to burn fat. Your body will start burning fat for energy instead of needing a sugar rush to do that. I know multitudes of people who have a diet high in good, healthy fats and they are fit, lean and feel healthy.
Good oils to use for cooking or baking are:
Olive Oil (organic, cold pressed and extra virgin)
Coconut Oil (it must smell like coconut, so unrefined)
Butter (grass-fed organic is the best)
Grapeseed Oil
Red Palm Oil (I usually add this to smoothies or eggs)
(Sesame, Almond, Avocado, Walnut and Flax are also good oils, but you can’t heat them or they will denature. I will occasionally use them for salad dressings. Most of these I don’t keep on hand because I don’t use them enough and they are pretty expensive)
I don’t even need or use a spray bottle for my oils. I just dump them in the pan or grease a pan with a stick of butter. If you want a sprayer, you can get the Misto Gormet Olive Oil Sprayer. You add the pressure by pumping it each time you use it, so there is no need for propellants. I would use this for grapeseed oil so you can spray it on almost everything and not have the taste of olive oil on your baked goods. Plus, it’s only $10, so that’s a good deal for this reusable bottle.
If you use PAM spray, don’t worry about it because I used it at one time too. Just take this new information and work to switch the oils around in your house. And don’t worry about fat… it’s vital for our bodies and extremely healing!
