Talking about coffee enemas can sometimes make people uncomfortable. But stick with me, they have so many benefits for your health and are a great tool to have in your healthy living toolbox.
The Science Behind Coffee Enemas
Coffee enemas have been around since WWI time frame when it was discovered that they helped to reduce pain in a wounded solider. The practice has since been adopted by functional practitioners to treat chronic illness and improve health overall. The practice of coffee enemas is common in the Gerson Therapy technique for cancer treatment.
Coffee contains Cafestol palmitate and Kahweol palmitate, two constituents that can increase the level of glutathione in the intestines and liver. Glutathione is a vital detoxification antioxidant that works to break apart chemical carcinogens so that the body can remove them. The less roasted the coffee bean, the higher the content of Cafestol palmitate and Kahweol palmitate. Interesting fact, coffee is the only known source of both of these constituents.
Coffee is also a significant source of antioxidants which help lower inflammation in the liver and assist the liver cells in regeneration. Coffee enemas have additional benefits for the liver as well. If toxins build up in the bile duct, bile can no longer freely flow to the intestines meaning the toxins continue to back up into the liver. A coffee enema can help to unblock a clogged bile duct.
Inside the rectum are hemorrhoidal veins that directly connect to the hepatic portal which leads straight to the liver. This is located about 6 inches into the rectum which is why it is recommended to insert the tube 6 inches. This allows the coffee to be absorbed through the hemorrhoidal veins to the hepatic portal vein and directly to the liver. The caffeine dilates the blood vessels increasing the absorption of the coffee and the constituents. The liver contains about 10% of the blood in the body and filters at a rate of about 1.4 liters in a minute. About every 3 minutes all of your blood filters through the liver. By keeping the enema in for 15-20 minutes, you will filter all of your blood through the liver a few times. This leave the blood cleaner.
If coffee is something that typically gives you a caffeine high or jitters, no need to worry about that from a coffee enema. The caffeine from coffee has no effect on the adrenals or mitochondria when administered rectally.

Contradictions for Coffee Enemas
For most people, coffee enemas will be beneficial. However, everyone is different and you need to make the best decision for your body. Anyone with the following should take more precautions or be working with practitioner to help monitor and guide them. Coffee enemas aren’t the first drainage tool to start with. They need to be eased into and get your body ready for them.
- Extremely toxic body (work on drainage in more gentle ways first)
- Inflammation of colon
- Coffee allergy
- Pregnancy (I don’t recommend any detox during pregnancy)
Supplies Needed for a Coffee Enema
- Coffee. Organic, light roasted, coffee grounds are best.
- Coffee enema bucket or kit
- Coconut oil
- Paper Towels
- Bath towels
- Water (use distilled to ensure it is free from chlorine, fluoride and other chemicals)
How to start and ease into coffee enemas
Coffee enemas can be too much for some people. And I always advise starting slowly and working into the coffee enema.
Warm Water Enema
You want to start with a warm water enema. Start slowly moving the bowels. The warm water won’t stimulate glutathione production or really much of any detox from the enema. But it will flush your bowels and warm your body up to the enema. You can see how you do with the warm water and move on.
Chamomile Tea Enemas
You will do some chamomile tea enemas before trying the coffee enemas. I feel the best doing chamomile tea enemas. They do push some detox but not as much as a coffee enema. You brew organic chamomile tea and follow the same enema instructions for the coffee enema. Evaluate how you do on a few chamomile tea enemas before trying a coffee enema.
Weak Coffee Enemas
The stronger the coffee you brew for a coffee enema, the stronger the detox reaction. Start with weak coffee and see how you do and if you have any detox/ herxheimer reaction. Work your way up slowly to stronger coffee or adding anything else to your enemas. Like TUDCA, minerals, biofilm busters. These are all best done under the advisement of your practitioner.
How to do a coffee enema (Prep & Performing the Enema)
Step 1: Bring 4 cups of distilled water to a boil.
Step 2: Measure out 4 TBSP of organic coffee grounds and add to the water. Turn heat down to a simmer and let simmer for 15 minutes.
Step 3: Remove coffee from heat and allow to cool for 15-20 minutes or until body temperature.
Step 4: Strain the mixture with a mesh stainless steel strainer and remove all coffee grounds from the liquid.
Step 5: Make sure the tubbing is attached to your bucket or bag and the tubbing is clamped. Then pour the coffee into the enema bucket or bag.
Step 6: Lay out towels on the floor where you will be doing the enema. Usually in the bathroom near the toilet is best.
Step 7: Place or hang your bucket above where you will be laying. Add coconut oil to the end of the enema hose.
Step 8: Lay down on the floor on your right side in the fetal position. Insert the end of the enema hose into your rectum about 4-6 inches.
Step 9: Unclamp the valve and slowly allow the liquid to enter the rectum until you feel “full”. This should be about half of the liquid.
Step 10: Try to hold the solution in for about 15-20 minutes. The gently release it into the toilet.
Step 11: Use the remaining coffee to repeat the process if desired.
Step 12: Drink lots of water and replenish minerals and electrolytes.
Clean Up
Clean up should be fairly easy. Wash any towels you used in the washing machine. You will also definitely want to clean all your equipment throughly for sanitary reasons. I like to clean the bucket, hose and tip with some non-toxic liquid soap first and then rise all with hydrogen peroxide. You will want to make sure everything is dried completely before storing. I usually hang up the tubbing to help it to dry out.
FAQs
I feel like I can’t hold it for 15-20 minutes? Even shorter times will still get the benefit but you want to try to work up to 20 minutes. Sometimes it takes some getting used to the feeling. Another tip is to try to empty bowels as much as possible before you start. Try taking slow breaths and distracting yourself to help you hold it longer.
Another tip is add 1-2 Tbs of Blackstrap Molasses to your coffee enema. It adds minerals and will help you retain.
I feel worse after an enema? This is a sign that your liver bile duct is very backed up. This could be do to a build up of toxins or parasites. Try an infrared heating pad or light to help afterwards. For the next couple of enemas, decrease the concentration by decreasing the amount of grounds you use to make weaker coffee.
