Your home is supposed to be a safe haven for your family.
It’s comfy beds, meals together and toys spread out all over.
It’s homework and afternoon snacks, late-night cuddles and family board games.
It’s where your people gather together to rest, recharge, and connect.
But for many of us, it’s also a place where yucky toxins are living too.
While there is no surefire way to keep out every single toxin in the world, we obviously want to do our best to keep out as many as possible.
But, as busy women with full lives it can be overwhelming to know exactly where to start.
Well friend, I’ve got you covered!
Below you’ll find a fairly comprehensive list of simple ways for you to detoxify your home so that you can rest easy knowing your family’s health and safety aren’t being compromised.
Some of these are going to take just a few minutes to change, while others will be a larger investment of time and money.
The important thing is that you take action, little by little, and over time all your hard work will pay off!
1. Swap out your current cleaning products for safer options.
Even though it can often feel like our homes are never really clean, we spend a fair amount of time cleaning things up don’t we?
Wiping down counters, mopping floors, cleaning the mirrors….the list goes on and on.
One of the simplest ways to reduce the toxicity in your home is to opt for safer cleaning products.
I love using Norwex cleaning cloths, Branch Basics, and Orange TKO cleaner.
Swapping out your cleaning products is a quick and easy change you can make that will have a huge impact!
2. Make the switch to cleaner personal care products.
Most likely your makeup, skincare, and hair products likely contain a variety of harmful ingredients and toxins that can lead to all kinds of health issues, both long-term and short-term.
So getting rid of your conventional, chemical-laden personal care products and switching to cleaner, safer options can make a HUGE difference in your health.
I personally love and use Beautycounter products, which I highly recommend because they make some of the safest, cleanest, and best performing products I’ve ever used.
If you’re interested in learning more about Beautycounter feel free to shoot me an email or fill out a free skincare consultation form and I’ll email you back with personalized recommendations!
3. Switch to safer candles and fragrances.
During the fall and winter months a scented candle can make your home feel cozy, warm, and welcoming.
But most conventional candles contain toxins that are harmful to your health.
So, instead of burning one of those oh-so-popular, yet oh-so-toxic fall scented candles, try diffusing an essential oil or grabbing a non-toxic candle like on of these.
4. Start filtering your water.
One thing everyone needs to realize is that our water supply contains many toxins, added chemicals, and remnants of pharmaceutical drugs, which are being ingested/absorbed every time we take a drink or get in the shower.
Because of this, it’s important to invest in getting a quality water filter for your home.
You can find many great options for under $100 that sit right on your counter or attach to your faucet. You can also mount one under your sink for around $200-300.
If you want to go for the best of the best, you can opt for a whole house filter and de-chemical system, which can cost upwards of $4,000.
Whatever you decide, just remember that your drinking water isn’t the only water you use on a regular basis.
Remember filters for your bathroom sinks (where you brush your teeth) and your showers and bathtubs. You can get shower and bathtub filters on Amazon for around $25 each.
You can also purchase filters from Aquasana or from Mercola.com (Click Household).
5. Invest in a nontoxic mattress.
Something you might not know is that most mattresses are made with foam that emits toxic gasses that are not good for you (and just think about how many hours of your life you spend laying on your mattress!)
If possible, I’d highly suggest saving up to invest in a more natural, organic, nontoxic mattress.
There are several good options out there, and the one we personally have is Intelli-bed.
Their mattresses are made with a co-polymer intelli-Gel for support and clean breathing.
Naturapedic is also a great mattress that many people love.
6. Get a new paint job.
Most paints used in homes emit VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) which aren’t good for us to be breathing.
If you’ve already painted your home, I’d say just leave it!
But if you are planning on painting anytime in the future, opt for a zero-VOC option.
We use Sherwin Williams Harmony paint, but there are other non-VOC options out there too.
7. Make the switch from plastic to glass containers.
There are TONS of chemicals found in the containers we use to store our food and water.
This is one of the easiest swaps you could make!
Instead of using the plastic style storage containers, opt for glass or stainless steel.
There are several different brands out there to choose from, but here are a few of my faves:
- Pyrex Storage Bowls
- Stackable mixing bowls
- Large Ceramic Bowl
- Stacking Stainless Steel Bowls
- Half Gallon
- Coffee/ Hot drink Flask
- Water Bottle
- Wide Mouth 32 ounce
- Large Water Bottle
8. Switch to safer cookware.
Most pots and pans are lined with toxic chemicals that actually seep into your food while cooking, but this can be easily avoided by simply switching to different cookware.
Instead of using conventional cookware like aluminum or teflon, switch to something like ceramic or stainless.
We use both in our kitchen! I personally like Xtrema and American Kitchen Cookware.
9. Ditch the dryer sheets and choose a safer laundry detergent.
This is a quick, easy way to make sure you are exposing your body to fewer toxins!
Most dryer sheets are full of chemicals that are tossed around with your clothes every time you do laundry.
These wool dryer balls would be a far better option, and just as effective!
Also, choosing a laundry detergent without added fragrance and healthier ingredients makes a huge difference in decreasing your toxic burden.
10. Clean up the air in your home.
Obviously, the quality of the air you breathe is important!
There are two simple ways you can improve the air quality in your home and decrease toxicity.
The first is by using an air filtration system. These can range in price, but my favorite is the Healthway and the one from Dr. Mercola.
Another way to improve the air quality in your home is to let nature do its job!
Grab a few real plants and place them in areas of your home where you and your family tend to congregate. Plants naturally purify the air and are pretty inexpensive!
I know this may seem like a lot, but remember you don’t have to do everything all at once!
Little by little changes made consistently over time will add up to massive change.
So here’s my challenge to you: pick just TWO things on this list that you will commit to taking action on before the end of this month, and let me know what they are in the comments below so I can cheer you on!
