Did you know that a peppermint mocha you purchase at a coffee shop contains anywhere from 47-68 grams of sugar? That is the equivalent of 5 double stuffed oreos, 6 candy canes, 5 cups of a sugary cinnamon cereal (wowzers!!) or 14 mini candy bars. Can you believe that? How many of you sit down and eat 14 mini candy bars?
It is amazing how much sugar is in found in a coffee drink, and those are “drinkable” calories which don’t make you full. Imagine eating 5 cups of cereal, you can choose any cereal. Would you be full? I would probably not be able to finish it and be bloated the rest of the day. But when it comes to the peppermint holiday coffees you could have one every day and not think twice about it. It wouldn’t fill you up, but it would probably give you a stomach ache every day.
Want a healthy alternative that packs in all of the flavor of a Peppermint Mocha but without the sugar?
Ingredients
2 shots of organic espresso or 2 cups brewed organic coffee
1 Tablespoon cocoa powder
2 Tablespoons heavy cream or canned coconut milk
1/2 drop therapeutic-grade peppermint essential oil or 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
plain stevia or liquid english toffee stevia, to taste
Directions
- In a large coffee mug pour in the organic espresso or brewed organic coffee. If you are using espresso, fill the rest of the cup up with boiling water
- Add in the cocoa powder, cream, peppermint flavor (oil or extract) and stevia and stir with a spoon until combined
Enjoy your amazing peppermint mocha free of added sugars, artificial ingredients and pasteurized milk from unhealthy cows!

Thank you for the wonderful recipe! I don’t care for stevia, no matter how hard I try. What would be the approx. amount of sugar/honey/maple syrup instead?
Dr. Meghan says
I would definitely sweeten with raw honey if you really don’t like stevia. I would say 1 Tablespoon would work well. But, of course, you can do more or less to your taste preference. Have you ever tried Stevita brand stevia? It is amazing and people who hate stevia really like that brand?
