This week I did a little experiment for my post. Most of you know that I am a chiropractor. Some also may or may not know that much of my training is using muscle testing (applied kinesiology). I believe muscle testing for complex physiological processes and cleanses should be done by a doctor or trained practitioner to find the right protocol. We have many areas where we can block answers when it comes to the complex questions (for example if you don’t want yeast to show up in the gut or don’t want to take another supplement for your digestive system). I believe with the simple question, we have the ability to test ourselves. With that being said, I had this idea to test what was the best packaged tomatoes for our body. I tested conventional (non-organic) canned tomatoes, organic canned tomatoes and organic tomatoes in packaged in glass. The results were so surprising and I believe they will revolutionize the tomatoes you choose to buy in the future.
We have this belief that organic foods are better than conventional foods. And for the most part, that is correct. But I think that it almost becomes too cut and dry in our minds. What if there was a good, better and best to organic foods? I know that is true with tomatoes! I found a bad, better and best when it came to the non-organic vs organic. Want to know the results?
- I muscle tested the conventional canned tomatoes. I got a resounding “no”. It was not nourishing and helpful to my body and was not a healing food.
- I muscle tested organic canned tomatoes and I got a slight “no”. It wouldn’t be the worst, but definitely would still be a slight burden to our bodies.
- I muscle tested the organic tomatoes in a glass container and I got a very strong “yes”. These are what I would call the gold standard of tomato buying. This is also what I would call the most nourishing and healing option.
Why did the results turn out this way?
Tomatoes are extremely acidic. When they go through the canning process, the can has to be coated with something to prevent the tomatoes from breaking down and literally eating the aluminum can. They use a few products and one of them is BPA (bis-phenol A) to coat the cans. It is a type of plastic and prevents the erosion of the cans. Even in minute amounts (which some companies disclose very readily) it is still very harmful to our health. BPA has been found to be a xenoestrogen. That means that it mimics estrogen and has been found to cause cancer and other hormonal problems in our bodies. This is the reason that the organic canned tomato tested only ok. My body was picking up that there was something toxic in that product. My body tested very weak for the conventional canned tomatoes because there were pesticides in the tomatoes along with the toxins from the leaching of the can lining.
Our bodies are extremely smart and know what they need and what is the best for them. We also live in a world with a very high toxic burden that our bodies have to deal with. Choosing a tomato in a glass container is ultimately the best choice. It eliminates all of the toxins; the pesticides from the non-organic tomatoes and the toxins from the lined cans. There are many more companies putting tomatoes in glass. If you aren’t able to find organic tomatoes packaged in glass, jump online and order them there. It is well worth it! I hope you learned something from my experiment. I know that I will only stock my pantry with tomato products packaged in glass.

Where can you buy tomatoes in glass containers? We “can” tomatoes in glass jars, but we’ll eventually run out and I’ll need to start buying them again. Thanks.

Hi Kandace-
Most health food stores have them. If you don’t have access to them in a store, Amazon.com has them. I like Jovial or Bionaturae. I’ve used them both and love them!

Thank you for your great information. I love tomatoes, but have been careful about what I purchase. It’s such a treat when friends grow their own tomatoes and share with me!! I appreciate your research and sharing.

I love that you get tomatoes given to you!! I got a few this year and really cherished them :). Mostly, until I can have a garden of my own, purchase them in the store.
