Welcome back to the latest episode of Ask Dr. Meghan! I am so excited to be back answering your questions on toddler supplements this week!
Please remember… This is not medical advice! Just some things to think about. Take a listen and check out the show notes! There is so much information!
Here are today’s questions and ideas for supplements:
I really want insight on supplementation for toddlers. Specifically under 2. – Bianca
I received many questions about supplements for toddlers in my JEH Facebook Group. I get it, it’s hard to know how to supplement yourself, and now you have this little body that needs a supplement for their foods.
Ok… here is my first thought. Nutrition first! You can’t out supplement a bad diet. I don’t think food is completely sufficient, but really work on getting as many nutrients into your toddler as you can!
Supplements we use with Ottava:
- Vitamin D3 (35IU per 5 lbs of body weight)
- Greens Drink (Nutri-dyn Fruits and Greens)
- Probiotic – Ultra Flora Baby
- Fish Oil (sometimes Cod liver Oil)
- Magnesium Oil Spray or add Epsom Salt into their bath
- I’ll do a multi every once in a while with her greens
- Collagen. This isn’t a supplement, but gelatin is huge to have in a toddler’s diet many times a week. We also do bone broth a couple of times a week.
If she has a cold or virus I will do some homeopathy, add in some vitamin C, and often get some tinctures made for kids that support the immune system.
What supplements do you and your kiddo take daily and why? What brands? – Melissa
I answered the kiddo one above. If your kid has specific nutrition or supplement needs, you should see a natural practitioner. They can focus on digestive health, brain health, immune system support. It can be so helpful… for example, constipation or insomnia. You can work on foods, and I’d start there. But supplements are a great thing to use when recommended by a natural practitioner.
Now supplements for us. I have a whole article on what I believe we all could take, but not everyone needs all of them, and I recommend a specific supplement protocol based on your needs and labwork. I always say that you’ll hear me say this A LOT! This is my biggest recommendation. That doesn’t mean you’re not smart. You can’t do this yourself. I do the customized protocol for myself too.
Here are the basic supplements I take and think most everyone could/ should take them:
- Greens (NutriDyn Fruits and Greens)
- Vitamin D3 + K2
- Probiotic (not all, but can be a good start for good bacteria) scroll down to “probiotic” category
- Fish Oil + Rotating good fats
- Multi-Vitamin
- Methylation Supplement (activated folate, also need activated B12, magnesium, Vitamin D)
The topic of methylation is getting its fair share of attention lately, and rightly so. Methylation is a simple biochemical process – it is the transfer of four atoms – one carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms (CH3) – from one substance to another.
When optimal methylation occurs, it has a significant positive impact on many biochemical reactions in the body that regulate the activity of the cardiovascular, neurological, reproductive, and detoxification systems, including those relating to:
DNA production
Neurotransmitter production
Detoxification
Estrogen metabolism
Fat metabolism
Cellular energy
Liver health
About 45 percent of people have this genetic trait, what is referred to as a MTHFR defect. I have an entire podcast episode on Methylation breaking it down into an understandable topic (finally, right?). Listen Here.
